Tortoise & Lady Grey a blog written by Summer Edwards, goes into detail about how the products in clothing is extremely bad for the environment. In the United States and in England, there is average of 60 pounds of clothing, per capita, being thrown away each year. Nowadays with more people buying clothes, there is a higher demand, and with that demand comes the usage of cheaper materials. This materials are vital to large companies that need to produce a large quantity in a short amount of time. These materials, polyester and nylon, while beneficial to clothing manufacturers, are harmful to the environment. Polyester is a cheap and versatile material, which is easy for the consumer to maintain. The wrinkle-free properties and easy washing, makes the material desirable. However, it is used in clothing items that are fast fashion and cheaply made, which means few wears. The production of polyester uses 70 million barrels of oil and the materials cannot break down, this also contributes to micro-plastic pollution in oceans. "Polyester is a synthetic petroleum-based fibre, and is therefore made from a carbon-intensive non-renewable resource", which translates to, not good for the environment.Similarly, nylon is a man made fiber, and extremely popular in today's fashion. Around 60 billion barrels of oil are used all around the world to make the material, because it is used for so many different things. Nylon first became popular in the 1930's and during the second World War. The purpose was to replace silk used for stockings, as well as, military parachutes. Now the quality is a lot cheaper, and releases a gas called Nitrous Oxide. This greenhouse gas, has a significant contribution in global warming.
